During the fall of 1997, I was on my stand, watching a decent buck. The wind shifted blowing from me to him, he snorted and waved goodbye with his tail.
The cover scent I was using had let me down again! That next summer and early fall found me spending many hours in my basement working on a scent that would do three things:
- It would cover human body odor as well as other smells associated with humans.
- It would have a smell that appeared natural to a deer.
- It wouldn’t smell offensive to our noses.
I consider myself an avid hunter and grew up hunting the mountains of western Virginia. I have used urine-based scents, earth based scents, scents that smell like skunk, (which means you end up smelling like skunk) and odor eliminating scents. I grew tired of spending good money on scents that didn’t live up to what I was expecting. I was lucky to get the sprayer of most scents I tried to work long enough to get its contents out of the bottle and on me. I told myself; someone needs to come up with a better scent in a better bottle.
Well necessity is the mother of invention or so they say, and in that fall of 1998 I emerged from my basement with two gallons of what is now known as BTD Whitetail Cover Scent in varied types of spray containers. I gave some to friends and family, who, to be honest where reluctant for the most part to try it. I am happy to say now they ask me for more. The more people used it the more people contacted me wanting it. My hunting buddies’ and family encouraged me to market it. Thus BTD Outdoors was born. A couple of years passed and I decided to take my love of spring gobbler hunting, box call collecting and building to the next level and offer my calls to folks as well. This has lead BTD to expand from one product to almost 30. We are blessed with a very high customer satisfaction and loyalty because we do one thing at a time and do it right each time. Our products are proof the honest value and performance are still alive and well in Virginia!
