Using Our Scents
Whitetail Cover Scent
Whitetail Cover Scent is simple and easy to use. Simply shake the bottle until contents are mixed well. Then pump the sprayer (new bottles may require several pumps to prime sprayer) creating a super fine mist. Whitetail Cover can be applied to hats, clothes, boots, cloth drags, human skin (avoid eye contact as much as possible) on the ground near or on deer stands. Use liberal amounts at the beginning of the hunt and touch up about every 3-4 hours during for best results. We have found applying Whitetail Cover liberally before starting to our stands then a quick touch up after arriving at the stand, with a light touchup every few hrs after works best. We use it head to toe as well as on our stands with excellent results. Whitetail Cover has no shelf life we know of so long as it is kept out of extreme heat and direct sunlight (like a truck dashboard in summer). Keeping it in a room with your hunting gear during the off season is best.
Bear Necessity
Bear Necessity can be used in many ways, all of which are effective. It can be mixed with various grains, oats or oatmeal to create a treat both Whitetail Deer and Bear will love. It can be hung on a limb with a small rope while placing a very tiny puncture in its bottom, allowing it to slowly leak onto the ground from above. This will create a small drip which will attract wildlife. It can be poured directly on the ground without anything added and still have good results. Many customers use Bear necessity to aid in getting trail cam pictures, and to enjoy wildlife viewing year round.
Hunting over bait (baiting) is illegal in many states. Check local laws before using Bear Necessity.
BTD Outdoors does not condone nor participate in the activity of hunting over bait where not legal.
Sugar Babe
BTD Sugar Babe can be used just like any other estrous doe urine. It can be placed on the bottom of boots, cloth drags, or around your stand location. We use it to doctor up fresh scrapes where we know a mature buck is near by. We supply Sugar Babe in a 2oz bottle with a mister pump sprayer. We have found through testing in the field that the pump sprayer is the absolute easiest & least messy way of disbursing the scent. If needed the sprayer can be screwed off the bottle and a few drops poured in a scrape. Store Sugar Babe in the refrigerator if possible, if not (we have wives too lol) then in a cool dark place. Best if used during the same fall purchased.
Caring for your Call
Box Calls
Box calls are very easy to care for. The main thing to remember is the contact point between the lid and the lip of the side is where 90% of the calls sound comes from. BTD box calls come chalked with quality chalk and pre tuned by hand. When you notice a sound change in your call re chalking the lids underside with a good box call chalk (make sure the chalk is oil/wax free) will bring the call back to life. On the rare occasion chalking does not return the boxes sound, a small adjustment of the lid screw can be made which will change the lid’s contact point. This adjustment should be made in 1/4 turns until the desired tone is achieved.
Friction Calls
Friction calls create turkey sounds by the friction created by sliding the striker across the surface. What actually takes place is the striker jumps across the rough surface creating the sounds. Thus it is important to use sandpaper or a call tool to keep the calls surface scuffed up at all times. Attention should be given to the tip of the striker as well. Over time, dust from scuffing can build up in the wood pours and can deteriorate the striker’s quality. Simply roughing the strikers tip lightly with sandpaper will restore it.
Push-Button Calls
Caring for a push button call is very similar to caring for a box call. The push button call has a small rectangular block that slides across another triangle shaped block to create turkey sounds. The point of contact between the two points is chalked .This point must be re chalked when tone quality deteriorates. Use a quality white chalk which doesn’t contain oils or wax. The rubber band in the call is used to hold down force on the contact point. If the band breaks or seems to get weak it can be replaced with a similar rubber band from any source.
Mouth Calls
Mouth calls are the hardest to care for properly. The saliva in each person’s mouth is different thus affecting each call different. The best way to care for mouth calls is to keep them in the refrigerator when not in use. If the call is not to be used for a period of time, it can be cleaned as follows. Take the call and dip it in a solution of ScopeĀ® (use only Scope brand) mouth wash and water mixed about 50/50. Then rinse the call gently under cool tap water, shake it lightly until dry then place its case then in the refrigerator. If properly cared for a mouth call can last up to 3 yrs. If not properly cared for they will only last one season or less.
